EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
