One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
