Working Life of Earnings Not Enough for UK Labor Force to Join Most Affluent 10%, Analysis Finds

Per fresh research, the median earner in the UK would have to work 52 years' worth of salary to attain the net worth of the wealthiest 10% in the country.

Widening Economic Disparity Over Time

The study reviewed net worth information covering the Covid pandemic period and found that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have taken 38 years of typical employment income to join the top 10th of the economic ladder.

A research lead part of the analysis stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee setting aside their entire income throughout their career would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The analysis revealed that the gap between the assets of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had widened to £1.3m in real terms by recent times.

The researcher further stated: "These gaps are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the financial disparity expanding in actual numbers, the portion of overall assets in the UK held by the wealthiest families – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the eighties," according to the study.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "automatic" appreciation, by means of growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the analysis.

These gains generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 grew by more than 100% in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Area-Based Disparities

There were also significant area-based disparities, with the median value of net worth in recent years reaching 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, compared with £110k in the NE of England.

Health Crisis Years Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the data shows countless homes were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

Higher-income households fared much better, though. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
